Introduction

The birch tree is known as the tree of beginnings and symbolizes renewal. I think most people come to therapy because they are doing their very best to manage the impossible, but it is not enough. You know you need help. I am here to help you reflect on what is not working. We will lay it all out on the table and figure out where it is going wrong. We will process the why. Why is this feeling overwhelming? It probably is for a very legitimate reason. We can connect the dots and develop coping strategies to manage as well as brainstorm ways to get more outside support. Then comes the change. We work to incorporate what you learned in therapy to your life. Sometimes this can be internal changes with new knowledge or a different perspective. Or it can be changes in how you communicate and relate to others. Maybe you are the woman who has been trying to get pregnant or underwent a loss while watching all your friends get pregnant. Your pregnancy is not what you thought it would be. Or the new mother who feels she has lost herself and like she's drowning. Your partnership has changed. Maybe you are ready to change the way you interact with a challenging parent or sibling. Perhaps the demands of parenthood and aging parents just feels like you are getting pulled on both ends. You just received a cancer diagnosis and your head is spinning. Or you finished your cancer treatment and are back at work, but now all the emotions of what you went through are overflowing. I have worked with so many going through what you are going through and I am here to help. ~ Shannon De Ycaza is a licensed Mental Health Counselor in CT & NY offering individual therapy. She specializes in working with women during pregnancy through parenthood. Additionally, she works with cancer patients after diagnosis, through treatment processing the stress, doubt, fears and uncertainties that come during this time. Lastly, many of her clients are navigating a difficult parent or sibling relationship. Shannon works from a Person-Centered and Psychodynamic perspective. She believes that with the right support, validation, information and empathy most are able to figure out exactly the way through their challenge. Additionally, it can be helpful to understand how one's relationships and experiences in childhood and adolescence shape one's self, perception of the world and relationships. Shannon holds a B.A. in Psychology from Columbia University and a M.S. degree in Mental Health Counseling from Fordham University. She is certified by the Seleni Institute, specializing in maternal mental health. Shannon has almost 10 years of clinical experience owning this practice, working at a group private practice located in midtown Manhattan specializing in LGBTQ+ concerns, the Wellness Center at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and almost 10 years at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center assisting with patient care.
