Introduction

In a relationship, “trauma” shows up when one or both partners find themselves triggered by the other—their minds, bodies, or spirits become tense and anxious or somewhat disengaged. Communication breaks down. And the love and rhythms they once shared just don’t work anymore. They find themselves coping through life, coping through marriage. In some ways, trauma may be at the forefront of your problems. You may have experienced betrayal of trust, broken promises, deep disappointments, loss or grief. Or, perhaps, trauma from the past lies under the surface but comes out as reactiveness, bitterness, distrust or withdrawal from your partner. Maybe you find your mood or your partner’s mood swinging based on feelings of affection or rejection. Over the course of life, individuals and relationships undergo many pressures, and the stress of some seasons can rob you of joy in others. Trauma can also rob your relationship of hope and fulfillment. Becoming a marriage and family therapist and a trauma specialist grew out of my love for people and relationships. It also grew out of my personal experience navigating some of the complexities of trauma. I believe that pain and problems are real and important. But I believe that hope, restoration, and healing are too. Therapy is a big step and one that rarely comes easily. So as a therapist, my approach is gentle. I want to listen and to move at your pace, understanding the unique and personal dynamics that make up your story and your current reality, the story of your marriage, and its current state. I want to accompany you in the pain and hold onto what is good, even when it seems lost. Then I want to work with you to re-author your story and begin to explore a new chapter of life with love, freedom, and peace. To do this, I use methods like EMDR, couples EMDR, Narrative Therapy, EFT and Gottman Method. In therapy, we will collaborate to find the approach that fits you and your marriage the best. Additionally, I believe that people are body, mind, and spirit. So, if it’s of interest to you, I will also incorporate somatic work, spirituality, and faith-based approaches. Your story and the story of your marriage can unfold in a new way. Whether you are seeking marriage therapy or personal therapy, I consider it an honor to walk with you and support you, your partner and your family as you explore a new chapter.
