I am an actively engaged therapist (meaning I don’t just sit and listen), and I work collaboratively with you to find a pathway through your distress to get you to the place you want to be. The foundation of my approach is creating a relationship with you that is nonjudgmental, compassionate and fosters trust and safety. I make a point of meeting you where you are and tailoring interventions to meet your current needs. I operate from a strengths-based approach, which means I value your capacity, skills, knowledge, connections, and potential. We work together to understand the factors that led you to your current struggles, including past traumas, maladaptive intergenerational patterns, relationship dynamics, cultural influences, broader societal messages, changing roles, life stressors, and more. My goal is to help you help yourself. I integrate concepts and strategies from a number of theories, but Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a cornerstone of my therapeutic process. We work together to identify problematic thought patterns and beliefs that are keeping you stuck and help you to actively challenge those thought patterns. I will ask you to do homework (although I am flexible and understanding if it doesn’t happen), and I will help you discover new, concrete tools and strategies to try. I also often incorporate concepts and skills from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) where we might focus on Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regulation and Distress Tolerance. If OCD is an issue, I use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Inference-Based CBT therapy when appropriate. If you are a potential new client, please click on the Request Appointment button and select a time for your first session. During that first session, I would gather some background information about you, assess your symptoms, and discuss with you the treatment options and what that would look like. You can also get to know me better and ask any questions. You are under no obligation to continue if you find I am not a good fit after that first session. If you do decide to schedule an appointment, you will need to go through the process of submitting all of the required paperwork prior to the appointment (details will be provided once you schedule the appointment). We will check your insurance coverage at that point. For more information about me, visit my website at www.andrealockhartphd.com
